RÉTROSPECTIVE LUCHINO VISCONTI
50 years after his passing, Cinéma du Musée, in collaboration with the Ciné-histoire series and the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal, presents 4 masterpieces by Italian director Luchino Visconti in two double-feature programs on March 8 and 29.
Visconti, a major figure in postwar Italian cinema and “father of neorealism,” stood out for his realistic style and his innovative theatrical and operatic direction. He began his film career as an assistant director and costume designer before directing Obsession (1943), considered a milestone of neorealism.
The retrospective will present 4 of his most celebrated films as double features.
On Sunday, March 8, THE LEOPARD (Il Gattopardo), which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1963, will kick off at 2:00 p.m. It will be followed by the family drama CONVERSATION PIECE (Gruppo Di Famiglia In Un Interno), released in 1974, in a 4K restoration at 6:15 p.m. Both films will be presented with English subtitles.
On Sunday, March 29, LES DAMNÉS (La Caduta Degli Dei), nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 1970 Oscars, will be presented at 3:00 p.m. Finally, at 6:45 p.m. the same day, MORT À VENISE (Morte a Venezia) will close the retrospective. Considered one of the greatest art-house films of all time (The Guardian) and one of the greatest LGBTQ+ films of all time (British Film Institute), this work is a must-see on the big screen thanks to its use of color and Gustav Mahler’s mesmerizing music. Both films will be presented with French subtitles.
