PARK CHAN-WOOK RETROSPECTIVE
To mark the release of NO OTHER CHOICE on December 25 at Cinéma du Parc, Cinéma du Musée presents a six-film retrospective celebrating one of contemporary cinema’s most visionary directors, running from December 19 to January 10.
Park Chan-wook stands as a defining force in global filmmaking. His now-legendary OLD BOY (Grand Prix, Cannes 2003), the centerpiece of the “Vengeance Trilogy,” alongside SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE (2002) and LADY VENGEANCE (2005), became an instant international cult phenomenon. These films are celebrated for their audacious storytelling, striking visual style, and the way they blend suspense, violence, and flashes of dark, unexpected humor into a singular cinematic universe.
In recent years, THE HANDMAIDEN (2016) and DECISION TO LEAVE (2022) have further cemented Park Chan‑wook’s mastery of cinematic form, combining precision, sensuality, and emotional complexity with unmatched elegance.
The retrospective runs alongside the Canadian release of NO OTHER CHOICE, reuniting Park with lead actor Lee Byung-hun and revisiting the creative partnership first established in JSA: JOINT SECURITY AREA (2000), bridging his remarkable filmography.
Across these six films, the program traces Park Chan-wook’s evolution into a modern-day Hitchcock: a filmmaker whose command of tension, visual composition, and narrative construction places him among the greatest storytellers of contemporary cinema.
