To mark the reopening of the Decorative Arts and Design collection at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Cinéma du Musée is presenting a film series highlighting the eras, styles, and objects featured in the exhibition.

The series 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲 kicks off on 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟬 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 on Avenue du Musée of Sofia Coppola’s cult classic, MARIE ANTOINETTE (2006), starring Kirsten Dunst. A true stylistic UFO, the film is renowned for its bold blend of luxurious historical aesthetics and a modern, punk sensibility. After this open-air evening, it will be screening at the cinema starting 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟮 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀.

It’s impossible to celebrate 𝐹𝑖𝑙𝑚𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑆𝑡𝑦𝑙𝑒 without mentioning the visionary world of cinephile favourite Wes Anderson. For this program, his adventure film THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (2014) was a natural choice. Starring Ralph Fiennes, the film draws from various aesthetic movements — from Art Deco to Central European design, with touches of storybook illustration — to create a style uniquely Anderson’s. THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL returns to the Cinéma du Musée screen starting 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯.

The third and final film in the series might be the most iconic — and undoubtedly one of cinema’s greatest masterpieces. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968), directed by Stanley Kubrick, is a true celebration of modernist design and mid-century furniture, set against a sci-fi backdrop. The film notably showcases the futuristic aesthetic of designer Olivier Mourgue, whose work is also featured in the MMFA’s decorative arts and design collection. One more reason to (re)discover this cult film on the big screen. 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY will be presented starting 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟰 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀.
