Produced by HalfmOon within the Chaabi Habibi © project, in partnership with Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, Promotion de la Citoyenneté et de l’Interculturalité (PCI), Commission communautaire flamande – Cellule Patrimoine – Erfgoedcel, Equal Brussels – À nous l’Histoire, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Inspired by her mother’s unfulfilled dream of becoming a singer, Laïla Amezian sets out to bring Moroccan women artists out of the shadows. With the support of ethnomusicologist Hélène Sechehaye, the film gathers testimonies and life stories spanning sixty years of Moroccan women’s presence in Belgium’s artistic and cultural spheres.
Who are these women? How do they preserve and transmit their musical heritage? How do they navigate stereotypes and gender-based discrimination in both professional and community contexts?
This poetic documentary traces an intergenerational journey—portraits of women who have inherited, reinterpreted, and passed on chaabi, while sharing their experiences and their vision of the world.
