QUEER CINEMA CLUB #19: FOX AND HIS FRIENDS
Synopsis
In November, QCCMTL dives into New German Cinema with Fox and His Friends (1975), one of the most intimate and brutal films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a major figure of queer and European cinema.
Through the story of Franz, a naïve circus worker who suddenly strikes it rich in the lottery (played by Fassbinder himself), the film lays bare with relentless clarity the dynamics of power, class, and desire within a 1970s gay community. Behind the romance and the intoxication of social ascent, Fassbinder exposes the manipulation, exploitation, and quiet violence that consume his characters.
At once a heartbreaking melodrama, a sharp social critique, and a rare testimony of a burgeoning homosexual culture, Fox and His Friends still hits hard today with its modernity and emotional brutality. Nearly 50 years after its release, it remains an essential work, part love cry, part cautionary tale.
