QUEER CINEMA CLUB #18: PINK FLAMINGOS
Synopsis
In October, Queer Cinéma Club de Montréal (QCCMTL) dives into American underground cinema with Pink Flamingos (1972), John Waters’ scandalous cult classic that forever redefined bad taste.
Led by Divine, the iconic drag figure and timeless muse of the director, the film revels in excess and unapologetic provocation. Behind its deliberately shocking outrages, Pink Flamingos lays bare America’s obsession with respectability, offering a grotesque and jubilant mirror of its hypocrisies.
At once a punk manifesto, a queer happening, and a radical cinematic experience, Pink Flamingos celebrates the right to exist on the margins, without excuses or compromise. More than 50 years later, it remains an essential rite of passage, a work that continues to divide, to liberate, and to make us laugh through gritted teeth.
