About

CINÉMA NOMADE

Screening followed by a Q&A with Webster (Aly Ndiaye).

Synopsis: The friendship between Massamba and Mati, two enslaved people on an 18th-century plantation in Mauritius. Massamba dreams of emancipation — but for his daughter. Mati, on the other hand, dreams of escape — for herself. Her flight inadvertently draws Massamba into active resistance against servitude. A major historical epic shedding light on a little-known chapter of slavery in the French colonies: that of “marronnage?, or fugitive resistance. Camille Cottin (Toni en famille) is perfectly loathsome as a devilish Scarlett O'Hara opposite Benoît Magimel (The Taste of Things), charismatic and feral. A film that avoids didacticism while remaining an essential act of remembrance

ABOUT WEBSTER

Aly Ndiaye, also known as Webster, is a veteran of Quebec’s hip-hop scene. Alongside his music career, he has spent over two decades researching the history of slavery and the Afro-descendant/African presence in Quebec and Canada since the time of New France. He has led numerous projects aimed at making this lesser-known history accessible to the general public.

Aly Ndiaye gives lectures, works as a consultant for museum institutions, and regularly appears in the media to discuss Afro-Quebecer/Canadian history. He has been invited multiple times by the United Nations and UNESCO to participate in panels on issues related to slavery and racism, and since 2023, he has represented Quebec on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.
