Synopsis
When notary Lebel (Rémy Girard) reads the will of their mother, Nawal (Lubna Azabal), to Jeanne and Simon Marwan (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette), the twins are stunned to receive two envelopes—one addressed to a father they believed was dead and the other to a brother they never knew existed. Jeanne sees this enigmatic bequest as the key to Nawal’s silence, who had withdrawn into unexplained muteness in the final weeks before her death. She immediately sets out for the Middle East to unearth the past of a family she knows almost nothing about.
Simon, on the other hand, has no patience for the posthumous whims of a mother who was always distant and sparing with her affection. But his love for his sister soon compels him to join Jeanne, traveling alongside her through the land of their ancestors in search of a Nawal far removed from the mother they once knew. With the support of notary Lebel, the twins trace the history of the woman who gave them life, uncovering a tragic fate scarred by war and hatred… and the extraordinary courage of an exceptional woman.
An adaptation of Wajdi Mouawad’s acclaimed play, Incendies is a deeply moving coming-of-age journey that intertwines the singular horror of war with a powerful and poetic exploration of the indelible legacy of violence—and the astonishing power of resilience.
