1990, Iraq. International financial sanctions have caused a famine, yet Saddam Hussein continues to demand that his birthday be celebrated. At school, 9-year-old Lamia is chosen to make the cake. Living in poverty with her grandmother, she sets off with her rooster under her arm, hoping to find the necessary ingredients in town.
This dramedy depicts life under Saddam Hussein through the eyes of a little girl in search of sugar, revealing corruption, poverty, and resilience with touching realism and a powerful ending.
