BATTLE ROYALE
About
PARC AT MIDNIGHT: NEW CLASSICS
In the near future, unemployment has soared and juvenile crime has exploded in the face of economic recession. The Japanese government passes the Battle Royale (BR) Law, in which 9th graders are sent to a remote island where they will be forced to hunt and kill each other until there is only one survivor left.
‘’Battle Royale makes those that come after it look tame by comparison. The violence and gore are extraordinary. Blood spurts in vicious fountains. The deaths vacillate between uncomfortably funny and devastatingly maudlin. And through it all, Kenta Fukasaku (Kenji's son, who wrote the screenplay), laces in middle school melodrama throughout. These are children; their struggles are those of children, so are their hopes and their dreams. (...) Despite its bleakness, it actually suggests that, if we are all bound to die, perhaps it is better to look after each other rather than bury our friends for want of another hour on this earth."
