Located inside the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Cinéma du Musée presents the greatest art-house films of yesterday and today.
1976
Since the 1970s, Canadian museum expansion projects have often included auditoriums to support their educational activities (lectures, film screenings, theatrical presentations, etc.). With this in mind, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts inaugurates the Maxwell-Cummings Auditorium, named in honor of a great family of patrons who contributed to the museum's expansion that same year.
2018
An idea springs to mind: to add the 7th art to the already rich offering of the MBAM Museum City. The Museum approaches the Cinéma Beaubien and its director at the time, Mario Fortin, to develop this new project. Major renovation work transformed the entrance to the Maxwell-Cummings auditorium and equipped it with a high-end projector, enabling it to operate as a movie theatre. This project would not have been possible without the MBAM's major investments and the support of a generous donor.
September 25, 2018
The Cinéma du Musée opens its doors. General management, administrative services, communications and other common services are provided by the same expert team that administers Cinémas Beaubien and Cinémas du Parc. The Board of Directors is made up of three members appointed by the Cinéma Beaubien Board of Directors, three members appointed by the MMFA Board of Directors, and a seventh member elected by the other six. In this way, the interests of the two founding companies of the Cinéma du Musée are preserved.
